Submission: On The Inside – Emily Hurry

Artist: Emily Hurry

Work Title: On The Inside

Medium: Photography/Digital Images

Artist Statement: I don’t think anyone sees themselves in the mirror the same way that others see them. Because we see the layers of ourselves hidden from others. We see our anxiety and our fear and our flaws. I see my diseases. I see, and feel, my fused and skew spine, my celiac stomach and damaged intestines, my cracked and rash covered skin. I’ve chosen to share a piece of what I really look like today, to remind my community than you should never think you can understand a person from what you see on the outside. That humans have layers of experiences and pain and triumphs, some of which is hidden inside.
